Cody Carroll MGMT 535- The Future of Lying

Online presence in todays society is a must when it comes to career placement. In my organization, we have yearly evaluations called Non-Commissioned Officer Evaluation Reports (NCOERs). As leaders, we get evaluated quarterly and yearly. The quarterly counseling statements are made to let us know about our current performance and areas we need to improve. At the end of each rating year, we get evaluated between all of our peers and rated numerically from best NCO to worst, in easiest terms. Our yearly NCOERs are used every year to get promoted and to even get selected for specific positions of progression. The sections we are rated on are: Leads, Develops, Achieves, Character, Presence, and Intellect.

All military profiles/NCOERs are very different. Some people earn every achievement that is annotated on the evaluation, whereas, some have not done much work so there is a lot of "fluff". Fluff is when generic comments are inputted to take up the mandatory comment space. These comments are usually basic and used often. For example, John Doe successfully completed all tasks that were assigned. It makes no sense to me why we even input fluff but higher echelons require their yearly "report card" to be fully completed. Sometimes leaders will input dishonest information in as fluff to make their buddy stand out, even though they have not done that work.

With the current pandemic, my peers and I have to find different means of communication, via social media, to contact out targeted market for recruiting. When we prospect, we are suppose to log attempts made each time we try and contact individuals. That is the ethical side of our job. Unethically, some of my peers will just sit on their Facebook, watching videos, and log attempts that have not been made. This makes it difficult for us to make our monthly mission and forces those who actually work, to work harder.

After watching this video, I believe I will try to communicate a little more thoroughly to try and make a point as to why we chose to do what we do. If there is a purpose, motivation, and a direction in the way to achieve those goals, then the mission will be completed on time. That is the role of a leader, provide purpose, motivation, and direction!

  1. Cody,

I can understand how sometimes people would pretend to work hard when they are actually not doing what they should be doing for several reasons. A true sign of unethical behavior.
